Cwejman S1 MK2: DJ Puzzle Examines A Semi-Modular Monophonic

"DJ Puzzle, known to his parents as Jason Donnelly, starts this video off by pronouncing one of the most awkward looking brand names in synthesis before showing us how to make a sine wave bassline with the Cwejman S1 MK2.

I made a sine wave bassline in second grade art class out of glue, macaroni, and glitter, but if you prefer to make them with semi-modular, monophonic, analog synths, you should probably stop reading this and watch the video.

Seriously, you have no choice because this is the last sentence." - thanks to DjPuzzle73

The Cwejman link is to a SoundOnSound review by Gordon Reid...

Hang Drum

Hang means "hand" in the Bernese language, and is pronounced "hung or hong". The Hang was developed in Switzerland. It was the result of many years of research on the steelpan and the study of the diverse collection of instruments from around the world, such as Gongs, Gamelan, Ghatam, drums, bells, etc. The instrument is played with the hands. Udu-like sounds are produced with the air resonance, the sounds of the clamped shallow shells sound like bells or harmonically tuned steelpans. The inner note on the bottom dome is the bass note, and when played in a dampened way allows change in pitch like a talking drum. Seven to nine notes are tuned harmonically around a central deep note.

Apparently there's a massive waiting list for these things...and you have to visit the lads in Spain to get it! I still want one....

Ed Devanes Instrument

Irish electro producer (and apparently experimental luthier) has some pix up of his home made instrument....apparently called "Ed Devanes Home Made Instrument" (got to think of a catchy/corny name or ya'll never make it to NIME!)

He describes it as "a baritone (30.5 inch/ 774 mm scale length), tabletop, flat-wound-stringed, fretless, 3 humbucker pick-up'd, in line headstocked instrument with an adjustable tailpiece for quick tuning changes"
If that sounds like your kinda thing there's:

Electronic Musician have published this years music tech awards. Worth a look. In there was their choice for free download of the year. It was one I'd missed called Analog Box 2 from Andyware. It looked interesting so I downloaded it and gave it a whirl and very good it is.

It's a fairly low level modular synth environment based on simple circuits like oscillators, filters etc. With it you can download over 50 jambots among which you'll find subtractive synths, fm synths and a good few algorithmic music patches - expect bleeps, beeps, robotic sounds and little grooves... All in all a very cool bit of free software.

You'll find a few tutorials on the website detailing construction for a FM synth and how to use MIDI but the library of jambots is really where the action is. A bit of poking and rewiring and should be up and running.

James Morrison's Digital Trumpet

"An Electronic Digital Trumpet that is more expressive than keyboard. Created by Stephen Marshall." - thanks to cplai

Pretty cool and very expressive.... although all the suspect GM MIDI patches make it sound like cheescore electronic jazz from 1986... "and welcome to Saturday night liiiiiive"

Percussive Maintenance

"What seems to be wrong with it?"

"It's fkin Behringer mate..."

Mobb Deep's Prodigy uses Software Translation

Mobb Deep's Prodigy is going to use proprietary speech-conversion software developed by Voxonic to translate his latest album into anything up to 1400 different languages. It works by initially feeding the software written lyrics then giving a 10 minute voice sample. The software analyzes the voice for phonemes or very small characteristic attributes of the voice and then uses these to build up a voice model. It then spits out the rap in a multitude of languages including everything from French & German to Urdu in what sounds like the Prodigy's real voice. If Google translator is anything to go by it could be a hoot.... I wonder if it does Irish :?
